A pier cap is the crown that protects and finishes a masonry pier, gate post, or pillar. Like coping on a wall, a well-designed cap sheds water and prevents the freeze-thaw damage that destroys unprotected masonry — while adding an elegant architectural accent in cast stone or precast concrete.
Why piers need caps
The top of a pier is exposed on all sides and is a prime entry point for water. A cap with an adequate overhang and drip edge carries rainwater clear of the pier, keeping the masonry dry and sound through NYC's freeze-thaw cycles.
Common pier cap styles
- Ball cap: a flat cap topped with a sphere — classic and formal
- Pyramid cap: a sloped four-sided top that sheds water cleanly
- Bullnose cap: a gently rounded profile
- Flat / base cap: a simple, clean crown
Finials and ornaments
For extra character, a finial — a ball, acorn, pineapple, or other ornament — can crown the cap. These accents are often used on entry piers, garden walls, and formal gateposts.
Where pier caps are used
Pier caps and finials suit driveway and garden gate posts, fence and wall piers, stoop newels, and formal entry pillars — anywhere a masonry pier needs protection and a finished top.
